Synergy Brass Quintet
Life on the Road!
Over the last few years, the Synergy
Brass Quintet has spent the majority of their time traveling and
performing. Specifically, for the last three years, the ensemble has
performed no less than 200 engagements each season. In 2005, Synergy
performed an astounding 263 engagements across the United State,
including regular appearances on Houston Public Radio's "The Front
Row," a live television broadcast with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on
NBC, and concerts and educational programs. We are very proud of the
work that we've done to bring our passion for music to others. We'll
keep working to inspire future musicians and music-lovers and to
redefine classical music for a new era. We couldn't do it without the
support of our fans, so: Thank you!
National Tour 2006/07
Synergy Brass Quintet is
on the road again...yeah, I know...when are they not?!? Since leaving
Boston in Late August, the ensemble has performed in NY, PA, IN, IL,
WI, IA, MN, MO, KS, OK, MD, DC, VA and we're off to TN, back to IL,
then to down to FL before finally returning to MA to take a break for
the Holidays. We been having a great time meeting new people and seeing
new places. The most exciting part of the 06/07 Season is that this
will be Synergy Brass Quintet's 10th Anniversary Season. Yup, that's
right. Bobby and Chris started Synergy Brass 10 years ago at The Boston
Conservatory. Now, Synergy is proud to be one of the most in-demand
ensembles in the world. BUT, we couldn't do any of it without you! Thanks
to everyone who supports Synergy Brass!
Synergy Brass Quintet
Uses Denis Wick Mouthpieces and Mutes
For more
than a quarter of a century, Denis Wick mutes and mouthpieces have set
standards of excellence that have made them the choice of the world's
finest brass players. The Synergy Brass Quintet exclusively uses these
incredible mouthpieces and mutes. Each mouthpiece is hand-finished to
exacting standards and each mute is hand-made to insure quality and
their perfect intonation. The Denis Wick mutes are the unquestioned
standard, and if you haven't tried one of the mouthpieces its well
worth your time! Denis Wick Mouthpieces and Mutes
Sonaré Trumpets
The Official Bb Trumpet of the Synergy Brass
We
are pleased to announce that trumpeters Bobby Thorp and Chris O'Hara
are now using the Sonaré TRC-800 as their Bb trumpet of choice. "Bobby
Thorp and Chris O'Hara are ideal ambassadors for the Sonaré trumpet,"
commented David Kilkenny, President of Sonaré Winds. "Not only are they
great musicians and performers, but they place a high priority on music
education and on giving back to the community." These are great horns
and if you have any questions about them, feel free to ask! We will
have a couple on hand at all of our educational programs and concerts
if you want to come by and give then a try. You won't be disappointed! Sonaré Trumpets
Synergy Brass Quintet
at the International Trumpet Guild Conference
We
just got back from our performance at the 2006 International Trumpet
Guild Conference. What an honor to perform at such an event, and we
were in some pretty good company too! Other performers at the event
included David Bilger, Barbara Butler, Chris Gekker, Arturo Sandoval
and the American Brass Quintet. We had a great time and got to meet new
friends and visit with fans and colleagues. Apparently, we played
pretty well too! ITG Conference
Synergy for the Summer
After
a couple of shows in MD, NJ and OK we're going to take a little well
deserved vacation. But have no fear! Synergy will back in action,
new, improved and reinvigorated, starting in July. This summer you'll
have the chance to see us at some of our favorite summer festivals,
including Tanglewood and the Bethlehem Musikfest. You can also
celebrate America's Birthday with us at Old Sturbridge Village again
this year on the Fourth of July. We are also going to visit a few new
places so check back at the PERFORMANCES page and see when Synergy Will
be near you! Hope to see you this summer!

Masterworks for Brass of the Renaisasnce and Baroque NOW AVAILABLE!!!
Masterworks for Brass of the Renaissance and Baroque is a testament to both the flexibility of the modern brass quintet and the adaptability of some of history's greatest music. Much of the music on this disc was written for a group of friends to get together and sing. In that spirit, the group of friends that is the Synergy Quintet, sat down and played some of our favorite music of the period including works by Tallis, Victoria, J.S. Bach, Susato and many more. This CD is currently available at all of our concerts! Come by, see a concert and pick up your copy soon!
A Prophecy of Peace: The Music of Samuel Adler NOW AVAILABLE!!!
Synergy Quintet joined Gloria dei Cantores in mid March for the recording of a CD of music by renowned composer Samuel Adler for brass and chorus. Works from the recording will include his "Transfiguration: An Ecumenical Mass" and "Pslam 24." This recording is now available online at Borders.com and Amazon.com and will be available in stores shortly! For more information on this recording and the other recordings of Gloria dei Cantores, visit their website at www.paracletepress.com
Transmissions vol. 1 NOW AVAILABLE!!!
Transmissions is the first in what will be a series of recordings representing favorite moments from each concert season. Each of the tracks on this CD were individually selected for Synergy's own sentimental reasons and are a rare look into some of the quintet's most intimate performances. Selected tracks include Brad and Aaron's first performance with the quintet as well as a selection from Synergy's first concert at Tanglewood. This CD is currently available at all of our concerts and on the website.
Organ and Brass
We've just returned from a great recording session in Trenton New Jersey with organist Michael Diorio, and let me just say that the new Synergy recording of Organ and Brass music is going to be amazing! Now don't too excited yet...it is still going to be in post production for some time now, but keep checking this space for more information.
New CD in Progress!
While the ensemble was in Chicago this past August performing at the Ravinia Music Festival, we began the recording a new CD. We are scheduled to return to the Chicago area in March and finish the project. It should be available next season and will have many exciting new arrangements for brass. We'll keep you posted as things progress!
Transmissions vol. 2
Transmissions vol. 1 has been such a great success that we are currently looking through the piles of recordings of our live shows for this season. It was great to be home in Massachusetts for a little while, but the time has come for us to head out on the road again. And as much as we love our home town of Boston, for February, it will be nice to head down to Florida! Goodbye 2005, Hello 2006!
The National Tour Continues!
2005
Wow! This has been an incredible year! We have performed over 250 engagements in more than 20 states across the country. We've traveled from our home in Boston to Chicago to perform at the 101st Anniversary Celebration of the Ravinia Music Festival. From there on to Seattle, WA all the way down to San Diego, CA nd back to Boston with many stops in between.
Our horn player, Jon was seen on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. We've performed live radio broadcasts in NE, TX and OK and have appeared on live television with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir from Salt Lake City.
We've performed at Tanglewood, Ravinia, the Bethlehem Musikfest and even participated in the Boston Early Music Festival. Along the way, we've gotten to see old friends and make many new ones.
We've begun the process of recording two new CD's which will hopefully be completed and available soon (we'll keep you posted!). We've traveled by plane and in our trusty tour van...you know, the red one with the Red Sox logos on the doors!
We've seen the Rocky Mountains through five states, visited Redwood Forests, the Golden Gate Bridge, Mesa Verde, Yellowstone NP, swam in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and more. We've seen the geographic center of North America in Rugby, ND and even the World's Largest Ketchup Bottle...true, its in Collinsville, IL. Like we said, its been an incredible year!
2006
So, if 2005 brought all that and more, what is in store for 2006? A lot! Well, we're going to be spending some time at home in Boston, but then its right back on the road. For the rest of this season you will be able to see us in MA, NY, CT, Fl, GA, TN, MO, IL, PA, MD, DC, NC, VA and more. We are anxious to get things started and bring our music to new friends across the country. We also have plans to finish those two CD projects and start another one or two. Check this space and our PERFORMACNES page to see when we will be in your area and what we will be up to. See you soon!

Synergy at Indiana University!
We had the good fortune to meet up with Professor Carl Lenthe at the Indiana University School of Music, and set up a masterclass for the brass students there. We had a gret time, and all of the students were great. If you are thinking about going to school for music, this place is awesome
!
...On the Road Again!
As much as we all love being back in Boston, it is hard to keep us off the road...so, here we go again! We just got back from a very successful trip to Maryland and now we're off to Bethlehem, PA for our debut at the Bethlehem Musikfest. We'll be playing a total of six events over our three day stay. Then we return to Massachusetts to play at our unofficial "summer home:" Tanglewood! After that, we get a much needed week off before heading out on our 2005-06 National Tour! The first stops will be at the renowed Ravinia Music Festival in Highland Park, IL followed by several other performances throughout the Chicagoland area. Then, off to points West including WA, OR, CA, NM, UT, CO, TX and more! Check our performances page to see when we'll be performing at a venue near you! Hope to see you down the road!
Synergy Returns to Tanglewood...not to mention a few more summer Music Festivals!
This summer the Synergy Brass Quintet will be playing at some of the world's most prestigious Music Festivals. We are very excited for our return performance at the Ravinia Music Festival in Highland Park, IL, the summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on August 21st. But first, we'll be making our debut at the Bethehem Musikfest August 6th, 7th and 8th. Of course, lets not forget our local favorite, the Tanglewood Music Festival, summer home of the "home team" Boston Symphony Orchestra. We'll actually be performing several times at Tanglewood this summer including a special performaces at their Days in the Arts series on June 28th. You can also catch us at Tanglewood on July 17th, 24th and August 20th. We are also very excited to participate in this year's Boston Early Music Festival, not something most brass quintets get to do! We will be joining renowed Recorder player John Tyson during his masterclass at the New England Conservatory on June 17th. John Tyson helped us to achieve that authentic style on our Renaissance and Baroque CD, and he wrote the liner notes for Masterworks up-coming re-release...yes I said re-release...new tracks, and some surprises....keep checking this space for more information!

Okay, we were proud of them when they won the American League Championship...especially against the Yankees! But now that they are the WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS, we are just in awe of our BOSTON RED SOX. We would like to think that our tributes to them throughout the Midwest Tour might have helped a bit, if not just rallied more fans to the Red Sox Nation. At any rate, Congratulations WORLD SERIES CHAMPION BOSTON RED SOX! 86 years was worth the wait! We will keep singing our praises in tribute!
BUT WAIT! Thats not all! The NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS are now the AFC Champions and going to Super Bowl XXXIX in Jacksonville, FL! Everyone in New England will be rooting for the PATRIOTS to get their 3rd Super Bowl Championship in 4 years and so will we! GO PATRIOTS!

Transmissions vol. 1
Transmissions vol. 2
Transmissions vol. 1 has been such a great success that we are currently looking through the piles of recordings of our live shows for this season. Like the last Volume, this CD will not contain just any performance that sounds good, we'll find the ones with a story behind them...the special ones...rumor has it that there might be a DVD involved...Keep checking this space for more information!

Midwest Tour 2004!
So far the trip has been amazing! We have met so many great people along our travels and we are looking forwarding to making new friends as this tour starts to wind down. There are still a few shows left to go before we get back to Boston, so check out the Performances page to see where we'll be next!
Tour Diary Online
As much fun as we have on tour, you only get to see us on stage and after the shows...so what else happens on tour? Do we just go from town to town? Do we get anytime off? Well, it just so happens that we've been keeping a record of the trip for our own memories, and we thought that it might be nice for you to see what else happens to us on our adventures. The full tour diary will be available soon...here is an excerpt:
Milbank, SD: 9-19-04
"...So we decided to relax at Lake Farley for the day. We all went through intervals of napping on the field and practicing. During one of my nap sessions, the gentle breeze turned into a heavy wind. I sat up just in time to see Nick's music blow off his stand and start sailing towards the lake..."
Let's Hear It for the Home Team!
Even on the road, the boys in Synergy have been keeping up with our favorite home team, the Boston Red Sox! We stayed up late throughout their amazing play-off series with the Yankees, and were rooting for them all the way. We had a concert the night of game 7, but that didn't stop us! We had a TV backstage and we kept giving the audience updates during the concert. So congratulations to the American League Champion BOSTON RED SOX!!! We can't wait to get home and see if Boston is still standing!
Texas Tour 2005!
As we get home from the miwest, we are setting our sites on the next trip...and its a big one. Texas! We are still finalizing some of the dates (though the trip will be this February), but it looks like there wil be stops in Dallas, Ft. Worth, Houston and more. Also look for us at the Texas Music Educators Association Conference. Having two native Texans in the Band (Jonathan and Nick) this is sure to be a trip to remember. Look out Texas...here comes Synergy!

Christmas in October?
Thats right! The Synergy Quintet will take a week during our Midwest Tour 2004, in the great city of Chicago, to record our first Christmas Album. This project is set to include not only favorite carols, but some of history's most loved holiday works, such as selections from Handel's Messiah, as well as motets by Palestrina and so much more. Christmas is our favorite time of year, and its going to be hard to have to limit this CD, so there may have to be some more pojects like this in the future! We are looking to have this album available this holiday season! A perfect stocking stuffer for the brass lover on your list!

New Summer Concert Series Proposed

One of Boston's well known landmarks, the Cathedral Church of St. Paul is a gorgeous structure. The list of original St. Paul's Church founders includes such names as Amory, Revere, Winthrop, Pickering, Tudor, Bowdoin, Tyng, Hale, Greene, Reynolds, Gerry, and Hancock. Plans in the works for Synergy Quintet to start a new outdoor summer concert series tentatively called "Sundays on the Steps." The idea is to enrich the community by bringing some of Boston's many wonderful ensembles to the public. The concerts would take place in front of the cathedral facing Boston Common. Concerts in this location are expected to become a regular attraction and will add joy to the hearts of all who pass by. Although nothing is finalized yet, the wheels are turning and we may see the first of these concerts in early June of this year.

Music of Samuel Adler
ABOUT SYNERGY QUINTET RECORDING:
Synergy Quintet joined Gloria dei Cantores in mid March for the recording of a CD of music by renowned composer Samuel Adler for brass and chorus. Works from the recording will include his "Transfiguration: An Ecumenical Mass" and "Pslam 24." This recording will be available soon from Paraclete Press.
Synergy takes a moment for a photo with composer Samuel Adler and the director of Gloria dei Cantores, Elizabeth Patterson. This picture was taken just after the final take.
"Trasfiguration: An Ecumenical Mass" was originally written to dedicate the Church of the Transfiguration in Orleans, MA. Here you can see some of the incredibly detailed artwork on the church. It was great to make the recording in this beautiful space, we're looking forward to coming back.
Hard at work, Elizabeth Patterson reviews the score during the recording.
The gang's all here! Elizabeth Patterson conducts Jim Jordan on the organ, the Synergy Quintet and Gloria dei Cantores. Can you see us way down there at the bottom?
Ah, there we are! The Synergy Quintet (Jon Hurrell, Joe Stewart, Aaron McCalla, Bobby Thorp and Chris O'Hara) records that tricky muted section in Transfiguration.

Let's Hear It for the Home Team(s)!

Transmissions vol. 1
Transmissions vol. 2
Transmissions vol. 1 has been such a great success that we are currently looking through the piles of recordings of our live shows for this season. Like the last Volume, this CD will not contain just any performance that sounds good, we'll find the ones with a story behind them...the special ones. Keep checking this space for more information!

Synergy is home for the Summer!
It is definitely summer in Boston! How do you? Because the Synergy Brass Quintet is performing their 2ns Annual Concert Series on the Steps of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in downtown Boston! They boys of Synergy will be performing almost every Tuesday and Friday throughout the summer. Check the PERFORMANCES page and come out to the beautiful Boston Common and hear some good music.
Masterworks for Brass of the Renaissance and Baroque now Available at Osumn Music

Ruor has it that they will be starting up their concert series again, so keep your ears open and you might find another local place to come out and here the Synergy Brass Quintet!

They are still Champions to us!
Well, the Red Sox made it to the play-offs again this year in the wild card spot. Unfortunately, our dreams of a repeat were ended in the first round. Thats okay though. As far as we are concerned here in the Synergy Brass Quintet, our Boston Red Sox are still Champions! Thanks for a great season guys!
The National Tour Continues!
We left Boston in August and now here we are in October in beautiful California! This is the ensembles first time to the West Coast and its pretty safe to say that it won't be our last. Thanks for making this part of our tour so memorable! Go Lancers!
